cherry blossoms

Once you pass through Tadasu Forest, you will be greeted by the majestic tower gate marking the entrance to the shrine and beautiful cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms blooming beside the "Sazareishi" stone, which is said to house divine spirits, are also very picturesque.

spring

With the arrival of spring in Kyoto, the annual Hinamatsuri (Girls' Festival) is held on March 3rd in the Mitarai River that runs through the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine. The dolls are simple dolls, with kimonos made from washi paper and faces made from rolled clay and painted with whitewash.

People put their wishes into the dolls and let them float down the river. This is especially popular in the spring at Shimogamo Shrine, where many people gather every year.

It is a colorful traditional event.

People dip their feet in the spring waters of the Mitarai Pond on the temple grounds, offer lit candles with prayers, and pray for good health.

Fresh greenery

"Tadasu no Mori" is a primeval forest that spreads within the temple grounds. Feel the mystery of this ancient forest and the freshness of the new greenery with your whole body. Spend time surrounded by the rich, ancient greenery. Just being in this forest will purify your mind and body.

autumn

In ancient times, the Imperial Court dedicated rice fields to the shrine as "Mitoshiro", fields for the spirits of the gods, and during the Heian period, a Mitoshiro-e ceremony was held to pray for bountiful harvests and peace throughout the world, with entertainment such as gagaku and kagura being dedicated. Today, the Meigetsu Kangensai festival is held, where people enjoy the full moon while listening to the tunes of Kangen music after the ritual.
